Lowes vs Home Depot

Visiting a home improvement furniture store can be an obsession to some customers and a necessity to others. Either way, you must’ve needed it at some stage of your life, or will need it for sure.

Two of the top leading home furniture stores in the US are Lowes and Home Depot. They’ve been competing for decades.

In this article, we’ll compare Lowes vs. Home Depot to help you choose which one to go for.

A Little Background

The very obvious difference between both stores is the concept of their products. Home Depot has the do-it-yourself furnishing concept, while Lowes tends to target professionals mainly like interior designers, carpenters, plumbers, and so on (read detailed Lowes review here).

Lowes

Lowes

Lowes was established in 1946 and has been growing massively ever since. It has managed to take rank as one of the leading furniture stores.

Currently, Lowes has a bit over 2,150 stores all over Canada, the US, and Mexico.

It recently announced two big news. The first was cooperating with the company Woolworths Limited to create a chain of stores in Australia. The second piece of news was the disposal of all of its Orchard Hardware stores and their distribution center.

Home Depot

Home Depot

Home Depot started business in 1978. It carried the DIY concept since the beginning and has been known with the famous slogan “You can do it, we can help” since.

Home Depot focuses on raising awareness of their clients by carrying out workshops that they referred to as “clinics,” to give them the know-how of almost everything.

These workshops went from sealing doors and windows for saving fuel to changing water taps and tiling floors.

Home Depot currently offers classes free of charge to its clients. Needless to say, this plays a major role in the growth of the business.

By 1989, Home Depot announced opening store number 100, and by 1994 they had extended to Canada and Mexico in 2001.

But that wasn’t the end of it. Home Depot aimed to go international, and indeed that’s what it achieved in 2006 by opening a chain in China.

Lowes vs. Home Depot

Despite the many similarities between and strong competition between both stores, there are yet some distinctive facts that are worth mentioning about each.

It’s also worth mentioning that Lowes has been in business 38 years ahead of Home Depot.

Below is a comparison between both stores.

Friendliness of Staff and Overall Experience

Both stores have helpful staff in terms of guiding you to where a certain product is and where the right aisle you’re looking for is located.

Home Depot service

However, in terms of customer service, both stores need some improvement.

Some clients feel that the stores’ staff members aren’t professional and actually consider them rude. Generally however, this varies from one store to the other.

In-Stock Appliances and Items Range

In comparison to Home Depot, Lowes usually has a larger variety of appliances that are in-stock at their stores.

The reason behind that is that Lowes deal with a larger number of suppliers and take pride in having next-day delivery as their norm.

However, when it comes to items like toilets, flooring and wall tiles, Home Depot will take a leading spot because of the wider range of choices, although Lowes usually has more in-stock products overall.

Offers and Discounts

Every purchase that’s made using the “Lowes’ Consumer Credit Card” gets a 5% discount. Besides that, the credit card customer will often be offered a 6 months same-as-cash option on their purchase.

Whereas Home Depot is unlikely to make any discounted offers to its clients. What it does, though, is that it offers its customers credit with no interest within a period of 6 months for purchases exceeding $299.

Both stores have more or less the same prices, although Home Depot has a sign that clearly says that they’d beat the price by a lower 10% if the same product was found at another store.

Kids Workshops

“Build and Grow” workshops are held twice a month at Lowes’ for children. They distribute giveaways to the kids like patches, cool projects, aprons, and safety goggles.

Lowes Build and Grow

At Home Depot, a kids’ workshop is held once a month. The workshop involves parents and children building things like a memory box, a birdhouse, etc.

Children get to take the projects that they’ve built, along with a mini version of the Home Depot apron that’s worn by the staff.

Customer Base

Lowes tends to pay extra attention to the way it displays its products, especially the decorative ones. This has made it become eye-catching to shoppers who are more “visual”, more often, being women customers.

Home Depot had more men customers than women. As a reaction to that, Home Depot started carrying out monthly DIY workshops for women to get a bigger women customer base, and they did succeed indeed.

Online Marketing and Shopping

Home Depot has an impressively engaging mobile app with their customers. Their application successfully achieved the two main goals that it’s been launched for: increasing the traffic of customers in stores and providing them with a pleasurable shopping experience.

Home Depot app

The application has the augmented reality feature, which allows people to see how an item will fit in their homes before purchasing it.

Lowes, on the other hand, focuses on social media mainly to get in touch with its clients. It has a reputation for targeting the “Millennials”.

For instance, it has an account on Snapchat, where it allows its followers to watch the chain of videos DIY projects that they’ve created in several snaps.

Lowes Snapchat

Lowes also has an online shopping option through either its mobile app or its website.

They also launched an app called “Measured by Lowes” which gives customers the chance to send, take and save measurements for repair work needed at their homes.

Delivery and Shipping

Lowes has a free shipping service for orders exceeding $45, as well as the option of ordering an item online and picking it up at their store.

Home Depot has the same service, as well as free shipping on appliance orders worth $396 or more.

Special Services

Home Depot has a special “Tool Rental” Service that it uniquely provides to its customers at most of its stores. Lowes, however, doesn’t have that service.

Wrapping Up

Home Depot and Lowes have many similarities between them, so choosing between both comes down to the method of shopping your prefer.

If you prefer a DIY shopping concept, then you might want to go for Home Depot. Lowes, on the other hand, is your traditional shopping store.
